Is it alright to feed kittens meat?

by benergic

The cat, unlike the dog, is a “strict” carnivore, some owners are tempted to feed their kitten exclusively with meat. However, you should know that this can have serious consequences on the health of the animal. It is true that the cat needs more protein than the dog, but he cannot be satisfied with it alone.

Throughout their evolution, cats have traditionally received a diet rich in protein . In the wild, ancestral cats certainly ate small mammals and birds of small to medium size. This traditional diet was rich in protein, low in carbohydrates, with variable fat content and contained the full range of minerals, vitamins and trace elements that the cat needed to cover its nutritional needs.

A cat that has just caught prey, like all carnivores, usually consumes it starting with the bowels . The animal will find there fibers (grass), fats and proteins (viscera) as well as carbohydrates (seeds, cereals).

This behaviour explains why all the carnivores, do not consume only meat (proteins and fats) but also all the other elements and nutrients which constitute their prey and which participate in the balance of their ration.

A kitten that is fed exclusively with meat , and nothing but meat, due to its composition lacking in mineral matter and in particular in calcium, could be exposed to growth retardation.

To ensure  growth , your kitten needs proteins and fats which can be provided by meat, but meat alone will not be enough to balance its diet. It also needs carbohydrates , which can be provided by cereals, fibers , provided by vegetables, vitamins and mineral salts . In this sense, quality processed food is perfectly suited to its needs.
