Dog Breed-Bichon Frises

by benergic

Bichon Frise (pronounced beeshon freesé) translates to a small, curly-haired dog. They were originally bred as circus dogs, and that explains the dog’s endless, persistent need for attention. Lively, affectionate, entertaining, and playful, Bichon Frises are the sophisticated up-town lot of the dog world.

History

In the late 14th century, a Barbet and a Poodle were crossed to breed dog that was meant to hunt. The Bichon was bred to have a short, sturdy, compact body to travel long distances while also being a perfect lap dog. Today, Bichons are known for their chirpy personality, incredible dance moves, eternal affection, and unmatched loyalty.

About The Breed

Nutrition
Feed your Bichon a diet that is nutritious, wholesome, and yummy, and you’ll have a dog that will stay by your side for years to come. Given the breeds’ excellent health and hardiness, Bichon Frises just need a good quality diet supplemented with vitamins and minerals to keep them in good shape no matter the age.

Grooming

Grooming a Bichon is not all that difficult, although they do need a regular coat clipping. Besides this, a daily brushing and weekly teeth brushing should do! If your Bichon lives inside most of the time, be sure to trim her nails to prevent ingrowths and bad posture.

Exercise

They are dogs that enjoy almost any exercise – as long you’re part of it! Bichon Frises benefit from a minimum of one hour of vigorous exercise with toys, hikes, swims, or just peaceful walks around the block. This, along with some puzzle toys, keeps them calm for most of the day.

Training

This is a breed that is always eager to please, which makes them perfect for first-time dog parents and for those who do not want to put in too much effort into training. However, you might need to focus a bit more on potty training and unexplained barking. Besides that, this dog is born well-behaved.

Health

There ain’t a healthy breed like the Bichon. Bichon Frises are very healthy breeds; however, as they age, like with any breed, they need supplements to help support their body. Sometimes, Bichons who aren’t exercised enough are predisposed to obesity and obesity-related problems.

Temperament

Want a dog that is a perfect companion for your kids? Go in with your eyes closed – the Bichon Frise is a happy-go-lucky playmate. Bichons are known to be good watch dogs as well by alerting the family if strangers approach.

Seems like a perfect dog to have, right? Here are the top five pros of owning a Bichon Frise –

They’re friendly and perfect for apartment living
Although they aren’t aggressive, they are alert, which makes them good watchdogs
Bichon Frises do well with kids and other pets in the house
Bichon Frises are hypoallergenic, which means they don’t shed
Bichon Frises don’t need much exercise and don’t mind lazing around on your lap all-day

However, this perfect pooch comes with her own bag on cons too –

Bichon Frises are loud barkers
They can suffer from separation anxiety because of their closeness to humans.
