What is Golden Paste
Golden paste is turmeric based paste which may be added to the food of dogs. It also contains coconut oil, black pepper and water. Turmeric has been a part of ayurveda for centuries and is well known for its anti-inflammatory, antibiotic and antineoplastic properties. Golden paste is good for both dogs and humans if administered at the proper doses.
Mechanism of Action
Turmeric contains the active ingredient ‘curcumin’, this is absorbed poorly into the bloodstream. Pepper contains an active ingredient known as piperine, this piperine when combined with curcumin results in better absorption or bioavailability of curcumin in the bloodstream. This curcumin is known to have anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antibiotic and antineoplastic properties.

Contradiction
- If your dog has gallbladder stones or bile duct obstruction, you shouldn’t give him golden paste, as curcumin makes the gallbladder contract
- Diabetic dogs may also want to be cautious, as golden paste can lower blood sugar.
Recipe
Ingredients:
1/2 cup (125 ml/60gms) turmeric powder
1 cup water (250 ml) PLUS 1 cup water in reserve,
If needed1/3 cup (70 ml)Raw/Cold Pressed/Unrefined Coconut Oil
2-3 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper
Place turmeric and water in a pan, stirring over gentle heat until you have a thick paste. This should take about 7-10 minutes and you may need to add additional water along the way. Add the freshly ground pepper and oil AT THE END of cooking. Stir well (a whisk is ideal) to incorporate the oil and allow it to cool.
This paste will last for 2 weeks in the refrigerator and for 4-6 weeks. It can be mixed into your dog’s food at a starting dose rate of ¼ teaspoon twice a day for 2 weeks, if it suits your dog and the like the taste the dose may be increased to ¾ teaspoon four times a day.
